Why not try a little coding this week?

The Hour of Code is upon us, so I thought that I would give it a try...and it was fun! Who knew that the coding that I learned in elementary school on a large cumbersome box of a computer is still applicable today.  I remember using 1s and 0s to get that little turtle to get to the other side of the screen, and that feeling of success is what the Hour of Code is all about.  Next week is Computer Science Education Week, and the reality is that we need to teach kids to code, so that they can learn to think.  Computers are so easy today, that no one thinks when they use them.  If we don't teach students to code, they will never understand how those apps are working, and therefore, they will never wonder about how to make a better app.    I don't have to know how a combustion engine works to drive a car, but I do need to understand it in order to develop a better, more efficient engine.  We inspire creativity by teaching how something works.

What is Mrs. Hodges reading this week?

I am so excited about some of the books I read this week!

First, I just finished Mockingbird, by Katherine Erskine.  Even though the story of Caitlin and her father is heartbreaking as they deal with the sudden death of her brother, Caitlin's persistence in finding closure is inspiring.  You can find a trailer here for Mockingbird.  This book is a nominee for the Washington State Sasquatch Reading Award for 2014.  Many of the students at Jefferson are taking the Sasquatch Reading Challenge by reading all twelve nominees on the list.  That is a huge accomplishment!

Second, I have been picking up unfamiliar picture books this week and reading them.  I have challenged myself to take the time to read one new picture book a day, and I found a great one this week.  It is titled, A Book, by Mordicai Gerstein.  The readers of this book meet a family that lives inside the book, and a little girl who is trying to find her story.  She searches through all different genres trying to locate her own story.  What a great way to teach or learn about types of fiction!  You can check out Mordicai Gerstein at his website, http://www.mordicaigerstein.com/.

Make the world a little better place

Shout out to fellow teacher here at Jefferson Elementary, Mr. Bishop!!! His Anti-Bullying Rap on YouTube has made the front page of our Mount Vernon School District website. Nice job, Mr. B!! You inspire us to be better people.

As I showed some of the students here at Jefferson, you can get involved in making the world a better place with my favorite YouTube star, Kid President. Check out his challenge for Socktober, and maybe you will be the one to start something. He is raising money and awareness to try to help homeless people all around our country.  You can help by buying his Happy Socktober Song by The Gregory Brothers.
